How do I get rid of the stubborn stink of dog in my new house?

I have vacuumed, Rug Doctored, sprayed numerous sprays and NOTHING seems to work! The house has only one room with carpet and this room apparently served as the only bathroom for the Doberman of the previous owner! It has electric heat so I’m thinking maybe the odor is actually inside the vents somehow as well. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It could be in the vents, you may have to replace the duct work to the point where gravity wouldn’t have carried the pee. Ask your realtor, they have companies they use to get the stink out of houses. Urine is hard tho, but you can get a cheap black light to find it as urine fluoresces. I like Nature’s Miracle, it’s safe and natural and does a good job. If the whole hose glows in the black light, you have a much worse problem. You may have to ultimately get the carpet and maybe even sub flooring replaced tho. You need to look at what condition that carpet is in & how much you like it. It doesn’t take long for trying this redemy and that to approach what you would have spent if you just give in & replace it now. If the black light tells yous it’s allover, I’d give in and call your local carpetland.

I have no idea what they spent, but the folks that bought the house across the street from me (that had bad doggy odor from 2 large ones) did all kinds of things and had it Stanley Steamed and ended up getting it all replaced. The realtor had used some kind of spray they would put down a few minutes before people would come to look at the house & it had about a case of Airwicks hidden all around it. Apparently all that was temporary and only lasted until the sold sign went up LOL!) Good luck!

  2. I’d pull up the carpet and pad and throw it out…get the floor cleaned and deodorized underneath and start anew—-who needs all that bacteria leaving a foul odor? If it’s only the 1 room, you’re getting away cheap. Look for great flooring or carpet deals, whichever way you go. You’ll be glad you did.

If it was just a spot, I’d say get some Nature’s Miracle from a pet store and treat the stain…but if it’s the whole room, my above advice stands.

  3. White vinegar will get out most animal smells. Mix up 1 part vinegar with 2 parts water and soak the smelly carpet to get the wood underneath. You might also want to clean the air vents and maybe the air filter in the furnace. The house will smell like vinegar for a bit while it dries but it works every time and it’s super cheap.

  4. If you are right and the odour is in the vents, etc – nothing will get rid of it apart from ripping up the carpet and getting the vents cleaned.

Put some plain old white vinegar in a bowl with a piece of stale bread and sit it in the room for a couple of days and that may help reduce the odour (sounds crazy, but it does help!)

  5. Remove the carpet to the dumpster and have the hardwood floor sanded and refinished. Liquids soak into wood.

  6. Check the wood floors. Piss will seep into the cracks ans stay forever. Call Masterclean or another rug cleaner.
