I am pregnant with triplets and have 2 pets and my cheapo vacuum finally died and it isn’t worth fixing unfortunately. Due to pregnancy I want one that’s really good. I don’t mind spending up to 150-200 but not excited about that much. I get a discount at sears of 10% as well. Anyone have any good tips? What’s difference between canister and stand up? What do you recommend???
edit- is it tiring to vacuum large areas with a canister vac?

I bought a Sears model and it lasted only 3 years or so of twice monthly vacuuming. I went to Miele and would never buy anything else (besides a Rainbow, which I can’t afford). I paid ~$700 for the canister model I got, but it’s a true German machine. You should get a HEPA vacuum to reduce the fine dust output that most vacuums give you. I think it pays to spend more because you’re not replacing your vacuum every few years. I would also go with a canister model that had power heads for rugs because an upright doesn’t have attachments for dusting, crevices, upholstery, etc. They also tend to be very heavy. Powerheads have come a long way and mine does as good a job on any rug as an upright.
spend the extra cash and get the dyson… it’s more but it’s worth it
My recommendation: Look for a used Tristar or Compact. These machines are virtually indestructible and can be upgraded and rebuilt when you can afford it.
They come with hepa filters on the exhaust and protecting the motor and work somewhat better than cannisters or uprights. I used a forty year old Compact for five years cleaning apartment buildings. It’s marketed as a domestic machine, but it did a better job than any of the industrial machines I’ve used.
We are old folks..& have used serveral brands over the yrs..For really cleaning up.(we have a dog & long haired cat)..I prefer the Rainbow..They cost more..but they really perform..No bags..the dust & dirt go into a water container, that you dump after each use.. They don’t re-circulate the dust, like many others do.
A dyson best thing since sliced bread.
Get a vacuum that’s bagless.
There’s nothing worse than trying to find the correct bag that goes with your unit. No to mention the extra expense too.
this is a purchase where expense has a big correlation to effectiveness. don’t go with something that is inexpensive. for your needs, expect to pay a few hundred.
