I prefer one with a bag, and it would have to be good for dog and cat hair also. Any tips , good or bad would help! Thanks!

Dyson all the way!
Sears makes their own brand of vacuum called Kenmore. They are excellent. They always cost considerably less than brand names and are made as well as the brand names. You can get extended warranties also. I purchased one with my vacuum for $60 and it covers everything for 5 years. They are one of the few places you can still find a vacuum that uses bags and doesn’t look like an old 1940’s vacuum.
Electrolux or a Dyson. the investment is worth it
Depends on your budget. If you have the money, Electrolux or Dyson are best. For less money Sharp and Panasonic make good units. For a cheap vac that will work I would suggest Sears Kenmore.
