My vacuum cleaner is broken and I was just thinking what did people use before vacuum cleaners? random question I know but it just popped into my head.

little known fact: the vacuum came before the carpet.
They did not have carpets. They had rugs, which they took outside and beat. They would hang them up and beat on them, getting the dust and dirt out.
Grab your ipod, go outside with rug tune into the incomparable Mr. Jackson and play BEAT IT.
You poor thing. From what I can remember, a lot of people used brooms…..yes brooms. Or they would take them outside and hang then over a rope or something and beat on them to get the dirt out of them or just shake them outside. I know this is wall to wall and that would be impossible.
Carpets Weren’t wall to wall there was a 2 -3 foot border of floor boards around the edge normally painted or stained
The carpets were hung out side and beaten to death by the maid. If you could afford a carpet you could afford a maid
grab the broom and start sweeping, i know it is a pain but i had to do it when i first moved out on my own and yes it works
carpet sweepers,u push it,had rollers and storage for dirt, worked fairly well
They used to hang them up outside and beat them.
People used to take their rugs (not carpet per se) hang them on a clothes line and beat them!
