  1. Members of my family have raised dogs all breeds and mixes for 50+ yrs. These dogs are not just pets but were working dogs. He proves his techniques work! I’ve seen him in action abuse IS NOT his technique. There is a difference between discipline and abuse. Use a dictionary. This dog’s response is positive to the training recv’d. I find it amazing that anyone could come to such a conclusion seeing this video or any other of his videos. I myself own a entire pack all of my dogs.

  2. Google search “Cesar Dogs Vacuum”. The 1st video result should be a clip that Cesar did for Womensday. In this video, Cesar teaches the owner how to help her dog overcome its fear of the vacuum. He does this using 100% positive reinforcement. Some people want to paint Cesar as one dimensional by only focussing on a small portion of what he does and often times interpret his techniques in a misleading manner. Do your research and then decide. Don’t just take the word of some guy on YouTube.

  3. Continued…In this video, Jean gives a physical correction to stop the dog’s “reactive” behavior (at one point, holding the dog’s front paws off the ground by his snout). Jean a “Behaviorist” calls the correction “negative reinforcement when it is clearly “positive Punishment”.

  4. If you go to the American Humane Association website, click the “Multimedia” tab and then click “Videos”, There is a video called “Tips for Handling a Dog-Reactive Dog” by Behaviorist Jean Donaldson. In this video, Jean uses a tool called a Halti. A Halti functions like a “choke” collar, but applies pressure around the snout instead of the neck…continued in next post.

  5. @bluvillain Obviously exercise alone is not going to help a dog overcome it’s fear, but you guys are mocking a man for providing a helpful peace of advice. You also act like its the only advise he gives for helping fearful dogs. Cesar also recommends obedience training and dog sports such as, frisbee, agility, and herding etc. (which have been shown to build a dogs confidence). He also teaches owner to become aware of ways that they are unintentionally rewarding the behavior, among other things.

  6. CM’s coercieve approach of forcing “surrender’ often elicits defensive aggression. There have been several studies on these confrontational apprach to training and they results are not favourable. I agree that his language is pure nonsense. It really shows that he doesn’t undertand how conditioning works.

  7. I became the bridge – what a load of rubbish from this self obsessed individual. All he did was counter condition and he was providing the treats. Something he should be doing more of (and less of the me, me, I, I)

  8. Why is he saying ‘with this dog’ you can reward and treat but with dogs who are aggressive you move into their space to get them to surrender? What an idiot. Both are expressing fear – why make the latter worse with intimidation.

  9. @dashdream, Millan’s approach is inherently violent and many people have made this observation. Teaching violence is bad. Making children insensitive to violent treatment is bad. And it’s well known that Millan’s methods don’t really teach. They suppress behavior. Studies show that confrontational training methods like those of millan induce aggression – one of the leading causes of euthanasia.

  10. @dashdream you are a fool to ignore the basic fact that women are the primary victims of household abuse. True that many men also suffer, but the numbers don’t compare to that of women. It’s ignorant people like you who can’t see the big picture who fuel ill informed opinion

  11. oh yea and also james you do realise that men too suffer abuse in the home not just women, its narrow minded people like you who cannot see the big picture and fuel ill informed notions.

  12. @James007829 he doesnt hurt or hit the dog in this video you need to check your facts first before comenting on something, why not focus your energy on people who actually are doing harm to dogs, even tho they might not hit the dog they dont excercise them enough or walk them off lead or fill the dogs life with enrichment or they dont let the dog be with other dogs or help a dog that lives with stress, cesar takes really good care of all his dogs and they love him and respect him.

  13. @dashdream, it seems strange for a woman’s magazine to be promoting violent means of control, when so many women have experienced the same. Especially so since we know that aggressive treatment of animals is a precursor and idicator that similar behavior will eventually be aimed at any weaker members of the household.

  14. @James007829 it is obvious you didnt actually watch the video, he used positive reinforcement, no alpha rolls or taps he never uses these methods with fearfull dogs. i think people who have a go at him havnt actually watched all his shows only a small clip of him working with an extremely agressive dog and assume this is all he does with dogs, if you ever watch a full episode the dogs are not fearfull with him at the end they love him follow him and want to be around him.

  15. “Make sure to do plenty of alpha rolls and foot “taps” to the stomach when they get scared”

This is massively ignorant. You cannot punsish a dog for being afraid. You cannot alpha roll away the fears. The only thing that consistently works is the association of the scary stimuls with a rewarding event. Sometimes with vaccum it must be in the off, not moving or from far away. But consistent reinforcement and counter conditioning works. And you don’t have ot resort to violence lilke MIllan

  16. @Liberalunconformest I’ve had some success with fearful dogs that belonged to friends. I get down on their level by sitting or even lying down and offering a treat or laying a treat on the floor near me. Sometimes I have to move back before the dog will come to the treat. Eventually the dog will come to me and after a few sessions he will take the treat from my hand and he will allow me to touch him
Some extremely fearful dogs cannot be saved and will become fear biters and put down.

  17. then your dog probably thinks the treats (or whatever your using) isn’t enough for what your asking of it.

  18. If your dog isn’t interested in the treats he probably just doesn’t like the treats enough and you need to try a different kind of treat or even use people food…just anything that will work. In some cases though they just aren’t interested in food period. Maybe it’s toys, or praise, but as long as you have something that your dog loves he will be willing to try for you! Another thing is you may be pushing your dog to hard and not taking things slow enough for him. If that is the case
