People used to think that a rocket could not be fired to the moon because it would have no air to push against once it left the earth’s atmosphere. Now we know that the idea is mistaken for several rockets have gone to the moon.What exactly is the force that propels a rocket when in a vacuum?

  1. propelling of a rocket is based on the principle of newton’s third law and law of conservation of momentum.
    The gases come out of the rocket with a lot of force due to burning of fuel.this action should have an equal and opposite reaction according to newton’s third law.thus,the rocket is launched due to the force of the gases coming out.
    therefore whether in vacuum or in normal atmosphere this happens.
    it is not that the atmosphere around on which this process depends.
