  1. I used a Rainbow at one time, but no more. The more we researched them the worse they seemed to be, even though you can see all that dirt in the water. My husband did some thorough research on vacuums. To be truly effective, the motor and insides must be cleaned after each use. You think the water is a good filtering system, but the dirt still reaches the motor and that’s what you are smelling, plus the dirt in the hose.
The next vacuum cleaner you buy make certain it has a good filtering system. You want one with a good bag plus a hepa filter.

  2. My mother has a rainbow also and it has the same problem of mildew/fungus smell due to the dirty hoses and the motor/filter assembly. Clean and/or soak non electrical components in warm diluted bleach solution . You have to open the canister and clean the motor housing also which damp cloth soaked in the same diluted bleach solution and let it completely dry before using it again.
This should solve the problem. Do not use baking soda or other carpet deodorizer on your carpet because they will stick to the inside of the hose and make the problem worse.
