Just bought a Foodsaver 8640 and it works great with 11 inch wide…

When using the 8 inch wide bags (I’ve tried making my own from a roll and using the pre-made Foodsaver bags), there is still quite a bit of air left in the bag. It starts the vacuum pump, and then almost immediately thinks it’s done and wants to start sealing it. I know it’s not the vacuum pump b/c it works fine with 11 inch bags, and yes I’ve checked to make sure that the gaskets and upper detection tray are clean. Any tips?

  1. The "…tried making my own from a roll…" is probably the reason it’s not working properly, especially if you’re sure the seals are holding properly.

What I suspect is that the "home-brew" bag material of your "own" is different [doesn’t have the dimples or ridges that the store-bought bag material does] and the machine sucks the air out up "front," but the collapsing bag pinches off, seals itself, and prevents any more air from being withdrawn.

Most vacuum sealers only work with their brand of bag material.
