Blade Issue,
Now, looking at the blades used by the DeWalt DW735X, I see that they are made of the same cheesy grade of steel as the dispos-a-blade system which only lasts half as long as regular planer blades. The difference is M2 HSS in the Dewalt and Dispos-a-blade system vs T1 HSS used in the regular blades. The latter are much harder and last twice as long.
In addition, It appears that with the DeWalt DW735X you are locked into a custom type of blade -in effect- limiting you to the performance of the cheesy M2 steel performance. (The blades aren’t going to last very long.)
I’ve looked and have not found the higher quality steel blades that would fit a DeWalt DW735x planer. THIS could be a knockout factor for purchasing what is reportedly the best portable planer on the market. I mostly plane extremely hard kiln dried red oak. Note that after only a few hundred bdft, the disposablade knives looked like someone ran a course grindstone ON the edge. This never happens with regular blades. They eventually wear to the point that they need “sharpened” but they ALWAYS hold their edge (the edge stays sharp and even but need replaced or sharpened and adjusted because of the wear that changes the cutting angle and depth). These regular T1 HSS steel blades start making more noise at about 800 bdft, and after about 1,500 bdft, the wear is bad enough that the angle needs to be rehoned and the blade depth re-adjusted.
The dispos-a-blade system knives lost their edge after only 500 bdft and basically stopped cutting shortly after that. This is the same steel used in the DeWalt blades. Not good.
Any comments or suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Rick G.
April 8, 2012 update: I did purchase the Dewalt DW735X planer system and have been using it for four months now. As expected the M2 HSS blades are a problem due to chipping of the cutting edge. However, (See Danny’s reply to my earlier review) Danny Found a site […] that sells the T1 HSS 3 blade replacement set for the Dewalt DW735 for $47.95. That’s not a bad price for these higher quality blades. And, as Danny pointed out they also have a set of carbide blades for the Dewalt DW735 planer for $123.00. This is a game changer for this Dewalt planer.
After four months of use, I’ve found the Dewalt DW735 (or DW735X for the kit) to be an excellent bench planer. The blade quality is the ONLY issue. Having found a source for better quality blades I can recommend this planer to anyone. I am very impressed with the performance and quality of the machine itself. It is very well designed has minimum skype as well as many features that make using this planer enjoyable. Most of my planing is on very hard red oak. It doesn’t get much tougher than that. I’ve been surprised at the power of a planer only running on 110v. Other than the blade quality, I have absolutely no complaints and now that Danny found a source for the better quality blades…this planer is fabulous.
