    What is there to say? the Dishwasher requires the salt to function properly. I can’t find it locally so I look in the Amazon Marketplace and – there it is!
    For what it’s worth – the Miele Dishwasher and Steam Oven I have are the most amazing appliances I’ve ever owned.

    Miele dishwashers come with a built in water-softening capability, this makes them more effective at cleaning, use less soap, but it means you’ll periodically have to add Salt. Miele products can be difficult to run down in the conventional grocery and Home Depot/Lowe’s type stores, but it’s easy to order this up via Amazon (it would be even easier if Amazon put this on Subscribe & Save so I didn’t have to remember to order it periodically), and it works quite well, has the right granularity and pours easily into the dishwasher. So 5 stars for effectiveness, although I deducted one for it not being all that cheap. Still, if you have a Miele dishwasher, you bought it not because it was cheap, but because it works (and is well built, quiet, etc.), so the price is a quibble.
