Vacuum Cleaner Brush Roll – How to Clean?

Yuck! I was trying to vacuum today and noticed my vacuum cleaner was hardly picking up anything. That’s when I noticed that the brush roll was just covered in hair and dust, etc. Any tips for cleaning the brush roll or do I need to get a new brush roll and/or vacuum (I think my vacuum cleaner might be discontinued when I checked on the manufacturer’s website)???

  1. turn it upside down so you can work on it securely. Get yourself a nice, sharp pair of scissors. The brush roll is made of wood or metal (probably) and has rows of bristles imbedded in it. You want to run the bottom blade of your scissors along the roll bar and pick up loops of thread & hair. You can cut the loops then, without cutting the bristles. As you cut, pull off the cut loops and throw away. A lot of the lint will come off with them. Just keep sliding the scissors along the roll, turning the roll bar as you work to get the stuff on the other side. It shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes if your scissors are nice and sharp. There will be a rubber belt around the middle of this bar (if yours is like mine) and hair and thread underneath this belt can make it slip, so be sure to move the belt over and check for things underneath the belt (if you check your manual there may even be an easy way to take the belt off). Once you cut away the hair and thread around the bar the belt will be able to get a much better grip on the roller and your brush will work a lot better (don’t forget to reattach if you took the belt off).

  2. Remove the brush roll and take a comb and comb through it to loosen the hair. You will most likely need scissors to cut some of the hair out as well.

  3. I use a box cutter type razor to cut the hair from one end to the other using one clean slice down the beater bar, then simply pick the hair off and put the bar back in the vacuum cleaner.
