What should you do first, vacuum and then polish/dust? or…

I have a Kirby vacuum cleaner, which is supposed to be a really good one, but I am never sure if you should vacuum first, then you can polish/dust any thing that the vacuum cleaner throws up, or should I polish/dust, and then vacuum, which would then pick up the dust that I have moved around from polishing? or should I just damp dust? but I am nervous about doing that on wood surfaces. So any tips about that as well please!

  1. Dust with a treated cloth. For wood, use pledge or some kind of furniture polish. For glass and other surfaces, spray glass plus or windex or fantastik on the rag and then dust. Vacuum and then, if you see any dust form an hour after vacuuming, dust again. That’s what I do. If you have an area that is REALLY dusty, dry dust it first, then damp dust.

  2. vac, do it to the drapes and such first starting at the top of the house and going down, then dust, the kirby isnt supposed to make dust but it still might. never use water, use a dry dust cloth or a spray on furniture polish or the endust sort of sprays. then clean glass last. when using the vac use the upholstry brush on drapes, furniture and lampshades and if your floor vents come up take them off and suck the dust out of the vent and hole in the floor. after you finish you could spray with febreeze. i had to get a new vac because the light one just wouldnt deal with the cat hair, the first day i got tub after tub of dust and hair out of the rug, now it only gets about half a tub per room, the first day i got 4 tubs just out of the dining room, things get worse than you realize fast if you dont have good equipment.

  3. Let me give you a secret to dust.
Did you know that if you build a breeze way to your doors Front and back to your house you will eliminate 30% of your Dust in the house .

Everytime you open your door you let in dust particles inside your house that are flowing outside in the air. YOu can’t see them because they are so small.

If you had to open a window pane door and then a Wooden door to get into your house you would have hardly no dust at all.

The new homes built today do not consider dust as a major factor when building.

Thise front doors look nice in front of a home, but they are deadly dust trappers that wait till you open your door to get in.

  4. That is the century old question. You can always rub the dust from dusting into the carpet but you cannot rub the dust from the vacuum onto the furniture. Dust last?

  5. I always dust first then vacuum…because if you vacuum 1st, anything you wipe off the tables, shelves etc, will fall on your newly vacuumed floor..I don’t think there is a set rule so do whichever feels right to you!

  6. When i was a professional maid/custodian, i was taught to start at the top of the room, work your way to the floor, then sweep/vacuum/mop your way out of the room. the idea is, any dirt you knock off in the process of cleaning the upper layers, you will get on your way down. Then you completely remove the dirt from the floor, and you are on your merry way. if the vaccuum kicks up dirt so that you feel you need to dust again after vaccuuming, that is a sign the vaccuum needs attention in order for it to do its job properly. for example, it might be time to put in a new paper bag, or empty the plastic container. or it might be time to clean the filters. Or it might be time to clean the fabric bag. There should be directions on how to do those things in your vaccuum’s owner’s manual, or on the manufacturer’s website. Poor vaccuum maintenance will decrease the usefulness and life of your machine. as spendy as kirby’s are, it is definitely worth the effort, in the long run.

  7. I always say dust/polish last. No matter what, when you dust your kicking it up in the air (even wet dusting) so yeah. Dust wait about 2 minutes, polish, and then vacuum.

  8. are you really that anal about dust???
    LOL 😀
I vaccuum first, but only because I dust as a finishing off thing… when I have time left. I find it hard to concentrate on the dust part when I see crumbs and pet hairs on the floor.. but that’s just me! Also, my vaccuum doesn’t throw much dust back up so it’s not a real issue.

  9. you should always vacum first then dust talking from expierence if you do it the oppiste it wont matter if you dusted you wouldnt be able to tell it

  10. I rule that I learned in the navy is to clean from up to down and then polish and dust last. If you have a lot of dust. Just dust first vacuum and then dust again. That way you know that everything is clean.
