What's the best vacuum cleaner for my type of house.?

I have a dog whose hair gets everywhere, I have a few short carpet/rugs, and I have hardwood and linoleum.
I just want to know what is the best vacuum cleaner for this type of house for a reasonable price that lasts, because I have spent money on three other vacuums that broke because of their belt or they didn’t pick up the dirt on the floor to begin with. Thanks!

  1. A canister vacuum with a beater bar attachment. It will be good getting dog hair off rugs, it will have attachments to use on plain floors and furniture, and you will have an easier time getting the hose up to vacuum furniture or cobwebs than you will with an upright vacuum. Canisters are usually more powerful too. Don’t cheap out on this, you get what you pay for. I bought a used Filter Queen in 1987 for $500 and it’s still going strong after all those years of cleaning up after multiple pets and even some construction cleanup and I’ve never replaced the belt. That’s probably not much more than you spent on those 3 vacuums that didn’t last. Shop at a place that sells and service vacuums, they don’t usually sell crappy ones.

  2. I recommended this vacuum to someone else here on Answers and will recommend it to you too. Eureka EZ Kleen upright. It’s 12amps, bagless, comes with 3 on board attachments and has a hepa filter. For a small upright, it has really good suction and since you have mostly hardwood and lino it should be just right for you. Retails for under $90, Sears carries it.

  3. We have dogs that shed and we don’t have a vacuum that has a bag, we empty the vacuum by just detaching it. Works on carpet and floors. The Restrooms I use a broom cause I don’t like the vacuum in there but the Dirt Devil we have is great and the cost of saving on purchasing bags has been great. We’ve had it for many years. The only problem I have is that my living room is sunken so the steps to the living room on a heavy vacuum is the only problem I encounter but w/ any vacuum steps are difficult to vacuum. So it isn’t a big deal, as my formal library/sitting room is hardly used so we don’t have to keep it vacuumed as often as the rest of the home, we have gates so the dogs cannot go in carpeted rooms.

  4. We have 4 cats and 3 dogs in the house so I know pet hair! The vacuum that has held up the best and done the best job for us is the Bissell Healthy Home. It’s got advanced HEPA filtration to take the dust, dirt, pollen & pet dander out of the return air stream, tons of suction, easy to empty and clean dirt collection cup, well designed tools. 5 year warranty also.

It’s got a similar filtering technology to Dyson with the multiple "cyclones" so it really spins the dirt and hair out and into the collection cup.

If you watch sales, you can pick it up for around $200; normal price is around $250.

None of your uprights that do rugs well will do well on bare floors but there is a cheap and easy way around that. Canister vacs do bare floors better but seriously lack the suction for carpet. Sears sells a generic bare floor brush w/adapter that fits right on the extension wand of the Bissell and you have turned your upright into a canister vac. This really gets the dust, hair and dirt off the hard surfaced floors. Cost about $13.00.

I’m so pleased with the one I have that I am considering purchasing one for the upstairs or moving the downstairs one up and using the new one downstairs. It just plain works a lot better, faster, easier than the sweeper I have upstairs. Old house, steep steps and a problematic back make carrying the thing up and down an issue. And it’s never where you need it! LOL

We use our vacuums hard because of the animals. We usually vacuum every other day and all the upholstered furniture gets it about once a week too.
