Could I use a vacuum cleaner exhaust to blow out a clog in a drain…

My upstairs sink and tub ar clogged. No plumber want to work on the old corroded galvanized pipes. I don’t want to put more Drano down there – it isn’t working anyway. I would like to know if it is feasible to use my vacuum cleaner’s exhaust to try and blow the clog out?

  1. Best to get a snake down there. I also pour boiling water from my teapot down my drains once a week and that keeps things clear. My house is 30 years old.

  2. Vacuum exhaust will not work. You can either use a plumbers snake down your plumbing to get the clog out. You can try plunging it with a plunger or you can dump meratic acid down your drain and it may eat the clog away. I am recommending that you use the snake first and see what happens.

  3. It won’t work. Use a plumber’s snake, or even better, replace the old corroded galvanized pipes.

  4. no it wouldn’t work. You need something called a plumbers snake. Its a long metal flexible tube. I think they sell them at Lowes or Homedepot

  5. No. Not enough power and the air would just exit through the vent pipe. You can rent a power auger and they will show you how to use it.

  6. It’s iffy at best. You have to make sure there is a tight seal between the vacuum hose and the drain, or the air will just push right back out. So if there are ant overflow holes, they gave to be sealed someway. Also, if your pipes are in that bad shape, you run the risk of busting the pipe and you’d end up with a bigger problem. Best just to pay a qualified licensed plumber to do it.

  7. Like others have said, it probably won’t generate enough force, however, I would also be concerned about back-blowing the draino that may be in the pipes….Makes nasty skin burns….

It may be time to see about replacing the galvanized pipe on a trouble-shoot basis….Rather than replace all at once, just replace the sections that are giving you trouble….

    good luck
