Well worth the money! Best in price range!, January 8, 2012

OK, first off one of the top reviews says it takes 13 steps to empty. Mine doesn’t, it takes TWO! One push the button on top to release the cansiter, two press the button on the side of the canister to open the bottom (over your trash can of course :P). I added pictures illustrating these buttons, plus a picture of all of the dirt! Also, do not expect Dyson fit and finish out of this vacuum. Its in a COMPLETELY different price category. That being said, what it excels at it is being the best vacuum cleaner I have used short of a Dyson. I’ll list the pros and cons of this vacuum now; then since the devil (sorry for the pun) is in the details I’ll expound on them a bit afterwards.

    Pros:
    Suction! (Insert off-color joke here)
Price/value (I paid half a c-note for it at BB).
    Easy to empty
    Getting deep down dirt
    Power
    Cleaning ability
Useful tools (for the most part)
    Rubberized handle
Size (very small and the handle folds down for easy storage in a coat closet)
Literally removed around 1 cubic foot of dirt and dust bunnies from the carpets of my 950 sq ft apartment (which were vacuumed recently).
    Carpets feel almost new.

    Cons:
FisherPrice-type Plastic (feels cheap). I docked it 0.5 star for this.
Hinge joint is a bit loose
Edge cleaning ability (you will need to use the crevice tool to get down into the edges). I docked it another 0.5 star for this
Plastic is very staticy so dust sticks to it.

What this vacuum does is be one of the best vacuums I have used under two hundred bucks. Period! It really gets down into the carpet pile to get dirt out. I couldn’t believe how much dirt I was getting out of the carpet. Easily 1 cubic foot of dust and dirt and we are very clean people so this was disgusting! The suction on this thing is VERY VERY powerful. It sucked up everything in its path. It was so nice not having to go back over carpet to pick up little strips of paper and other crap. It even handled the few larger things I threw at it with ease (such as a few pieces of dog food). I didn’t have any problems with it blowing dust back out of the canister AT ALL (unlike other vacuums I have tried). The rubberized handle felt very nice in my grip. I never once had any occurence of the attachment hose coming loose, then again I always twisted it in as I inserted it so it had a nice tight fit. Additionally, I didn’t have any issue getting to either the filter (when first checking it out) or emptying the canister. Don’t be surprised if you have to empty the cansiter a lot the first time because it gets so much dirt out. Additionally, using one button the handle folds down nicely allowing it to be stored in a coat closet (without the handle getting tangled in the coats). The hand tools are very useful, they got my couch cleaner than it has been in a LONG LONG time. Dirt devil was very smart in their cuts in order to hit this price point. Basically, they made it the most powerful cleaning machine its price range, at the expense of some other non-critical areas. One area you can tell they made cuts is in the quality of plastic. It literally feels like a FisherPrice toy. Very cheap (excluding the rubberized handle which felt nice). Personally, I am OK with this because if thats what it took to make such a good vacuum hit this price point then so be it. Also, the upper hinge joint (where the handle folds down) has a bit of play in it. Now if how something feels in your hand is just as important to you as performance then this vacuum isn’t for you. The one area that I really feel could have been made better even at this price point is its ability to clean edges. When running by the wall, it doesn’t get that stuff that collects between the wall and the carpet pile. For what its worth the crevice tool does a fine job at getting it though. Dirt devil was very smart in their cuts in order to hit this price point. Basically, they made it the most powerful cleaning machine its price range, at the expense of some other non-critical areas. In general, I think this has to be one of the greatest vacuum values out there. If you have an apartment or dorm room, this vacuum is a MUST! It stows away nicely and takes up very little space.

In summary, if you can get past the cheap plastic feel, this is HANDS DOWN the best value I have seen in vacuums. Its powerful, works great and is easy to use.

Is it too much to ask for a vacuum to pick up stray pieces of paper, not to spit dirt out the back, and be light? This one fits the bill. I owned a dirt devil featherlite 9 years ago but after my husband touched it after 8 years, it didn’t suck much anymore. Up till then it worked great. So I bought a vacuum that cost triple this vacuum thinking more expensive so it should be a wonderful vacuum. NOT! It didn’t work well at all. Wouldn’t pick up papers and kept shredding paper over the carpet, wouldn’t suck it up. It also kept spitting dirt out the back on hard floors, or at least every direction except up the canister. I had a herniated disc for 10 months, every time I used the expensive vacuum, it was so heavy and bulky it kept throwing my back out more and kept me down for a week in pain. I was so happy to see kohl’s had the new improved version of my old featherlite. It works as good if not better than the last one I had. It sucks really well. I have fun watching the dirt starting to move toward the vacuum before I even get to it. No spitting out the back at all! It is really lightweight but not as wide as other vacuums. The air coming out blows up so items on the refrigerator get blown off sometimes. I don’t mind. This is perfect for my 1400 sq foot house and my back is thanking me. Even if I had a larger house, I wouldn’t hesitate to use this one. It may take me a few minutes longer but is so worth it. This one even fits nicely in my small coat closet, unlike the more expensive vacuum. I had to force, pull and tug it in. Needless to say the bulky expensive vacuum is gone for good! Just because a vacuum costs more, doesn’t mean it’s better! I highly recommend this product!
